COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course provides classroom instruction and "hands-on" application of wood and plastic laminates, including surface preparation and build-up of counter tops.  The course covers types of wood and plastic laminates and the appropriate use of cabinetry refacing and counter top laminating.  Students will install wood and plastic laminates on various surfaces.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  Upon completion of this course, students will:

  • Be familiar with different sizes and dimensions of cabinets and counter tops

  • Learn the various sizes of laminate materials

  • Demonstrate correct measuring and cutting techniques

  • Learn the preparation of the surface to be laminated

  • Build a counter top and prepare the surface for lamination

  • Be familiar with various types of adhesives and correct application

  • Learn the correct safety guidelines for using power hand tools

  • Learn the correct technique for cutting a sink hole in the counter top

  • Complete the finishing process on the counter top and cabinetry using files

  • Install miscellaneous cabinet hardware

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Refinishing Cabinets and Countertops is designed to train do-it-yourselfers to refinish cabinets and countertops like the pros.  Expert instructors provide demonstrations and interactive training in the techniques, tools, and materials used by refinishing professionals.  Participants work on small cabinets and countertops to gain hands-on experience in the most up-to-date methods for repairing and restoring wood and Formica surfaces.

COURSE OBJECTIVES  To provide techniques that enable participants to solve specific problems:

  • Repair drawers and doors

  • Replace veneers and moldings

  • Remove water rings, burns, scratches

  • Choose and apply shellac, lacquers, laminates

BENEFITS OF COURSE  Participants will be able to:

  • Pinpoint damage to wood and Formica surfaces

  • Determine appropriate techniques/materials for refinishing surfaces

  • Complete steps needed to repair, restore, and refinish surfaces

  • Transform damaged surfaces into beautiful, functional surfaces

PREREQUISITES:  This course has been designed to provide information on refinishing cabinets and countertops, regardless of the student's experience.

COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS:  To receive a grade of Complete, a student is expected to satisfactorily complete 60% of the course requirements.  If a student fails to complete 60% of the required work, a grade of Incomplete will be applied.  Students may request make-up sessions if needed.  These sessions will be scheduled as needed for any student to satisfactorily complete the course requirements within 30 days after the end of the scheduled class sessions.

REFUND POLICY:  If a participant attends only one session, no payment will be requested.  After two sessions, full payment is required.  Attendance in any part of a session constitutes full attendance for the class session.
