COURSE PREREQUISITE: None

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The Great Lakes Charter Training Captain's Course is comprised of over forty hours of intense instruction, preparing the student to successfully complete the University State Coast Guard (USCG) examination to operate a vessel for hire.  Some examples of vessels for hire include:

  • Marine Salvage

  • Rescue Vessels

  • Marine Construction

  • Towing

  • Fishing Charters

  • Vessel Deliveries
  • Excursion/Cruise Ships
  • Dive Boats
  • Ferrying passengers

The USCG requires the skipper of such a vessel to be licensed if compensation is accepted for vessel operation.  Please note these are vessels for hire and are not recreational boats.  This license is for commercial purposes only and can generate an excellent income whether used part or full time.

Great Lakes Charter Training provides training for many of the Department of Natural Resource officers, sheriff's marine officers, and local police department marine officers, as well as the Army Corp of Engineers.  In addition, completion of this course entitles participants to a 10% reduction of marine insurance rates from most companies.
